Because we need something: food, clothes, shoes, and something. Shopping is a desire and sometimes is a source of entertainment. A whole day of shopping is the dream of every girl, especially the young ones, and the nightmare of parents and men in general. Going shopping is something very important, and almost necessary for some people.



 Well, here I am, ready to take you all on a virtual tour around the markets surrounding Kolkata- the city of joy. But before that, I would like to give a brief introduction to the shopping scenario in KolkataKolkata is famous as the cheapest city of India so, a visit to this city is a must for every traveller who wishes to explore the naunces of Bengal and it's Culture. Shopping places in kolkata can be extremely fun as the place has so much to offer to it's visitors.

1.New Market Kolkata- Shopping in the city of joy has forever been synonymous with New Market (S S Hogg Market), a Victorian Gothic shopping arcade which came into existence during the colonial era and still enjoys widespread patronage today. New Market is one of the oldest shopping areas, dating back to the colonial era, New Market is a shopper's paradise. Amidst the rush of excited shoppers, one can find a range of products, extending from shoes, sarees, exotic flowers and rare cheese.

2. Gariahat Market Kolkata- A major shopping attraction in South Kolkata, Gariahat Market is spread along a long stretch of roads with shops on either side of it selling a huge variety of clothes, jewellery, and electronic items.There is a section in the gariahat market which is dedicated completely to selling flowers & plants, fruits and vegetables. Likewise, there’s another part which focuses on selling meat and fish. There are also a bunch of restaurants and food stalls so one can sneak in and grab a quick bite between shopping sprees.

3. College Street- College Street market is one of the favourite destinations for book lovers. It is spread out on about a kilometre and half road between Ganesh Chandra Avenue and Mahatma Gandhi road. It is also the world's largest second hand book market.There is also an incredibly old coffee house by the name Indian Coffee House, bubbling with nostalgic feelings. One can grab that much-needed cup of coffee here.

4.Hatibagan Market- The markets around here offer some of the best silks and cotton in sarees that are there. The area is located in close proximity to Shyambazar
If you are a movie buff, you can catch latest Bollywood and regional films in its theatres at reasonable pricesThe etymology of the place stems from the Bengali words hati meaning elephant and bagan meaning garden.

5. Burrabazar Market- It is one of the biggest wholesale markets of textile in the country. Burrabazar is located near the M. G. Road metroBurrabazar can be best defined as the maddening shopping hub of Kolkata. There are four subdivisions of the market namely Dhotipatti, Tullapatti, Fancypatti, and Chinipatti. The festive season brings massive celebration on the roads with sweets overflowing, puja paraphernalia being sold, people haggling for a range of items including clothes and footwear.
